BHP Billiton
BHP Billiton is a global leader in the resources industry.
Formed from a merger between BHP and Billiton, we bring together an exceptional mix of quality, low-cost resource assets, complemented by a strong management team determined to operate our assets in an efficient manner.
We have financial strength through our cashflow and balance sheet, a diversity of products and customers, as well as access to global capital markets and an enviable platform of growth opportunities.
BHP Billiton Is The World's Largest Diversified Resources Company
We are distinguished from other resource companies by the quality of our assets; our deep inventory of growth projects; our customer-focussed marketing; our diversification across countries, commodities and markets; and our Petroleum business.
We have some 37,000 employees working in more than 100 operations in approximately 25 countries. Reflecting our aim to be a premier global company, we occupy industry leader or near industry leader positions in major commodity businesses, including aluminium, energy coal and metallurgical coal, copper, manganese, iron ore, uranium, nickel, silver and titanium minerals, and have substantial interests in oil, gas, liquefied natural gas and diamonds.
The central tenet of the BHP Billiton business model is that its diversified portfolio of high quality assets provides more stable cash flows and greater capacity to drive growth than the traditional resource cyclicals. In 2005, we generated turnover of US$31.8 billion, earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) of US$9.3 billion, attributable profit of US$6.5 billion and available cash flow after interest and tax of US$8.7 billion. As at 19 August 2005 our market capitalisation was US$92 billion.
BHP Billiton was created through the Dual Listed Companies (DLC) merger of BHP Limited (now BHP Billiton Limited) and Billiton Plc (now BHP Billiton Plc), which was concluded on 29 June 2001.
BHP Billiton Limited and BHP Billiton Plc continue to exist as separate companies, but operate on a combined basis as BHP Billiton. The headquarters of BHP Billiton Limited, and the global headquarters of the combined BHP Billiton Group, are located in Melbourne, Australia. BHP Billiton Plc is located in London, United Kingdom. Both companies have identical boards of directors and are run by a unified management team. Shareholders in each company have equivalent economic and voting rights in the BHP Billiton Group as a whole.

Monarch Building Systems
An innovative leader in modern manufacturing of building components and pre-constructed buildings.
Monarch Steel Construction know-how contributed to the development of specialised technologies and facilities for constructing Pre-constructed Modular Buildings. The modules for these buildings are completely factory-constructed with plumbing, electrical and also fire and acoustic rated construction.
MBS Pre-Constructed Buildings also include specialized technology in:
- Pre-Cast Concrete Flooring
- Colorbond® "Chamferboard" Profile Wall Cladding
- Aluminium Frame Windows and Patio Doors (special timber-free system)
- Powder Coated Steel Door Frames
- High Tensile Galvanised Steel Trusses and Roof Framing
- High Tensile Metal Roof Sheeting, including special curving process (Pantex Roofing Systems supplies the steel roofing, gutters, flashings and purlin products for MBS Pre-Constructed Buildings.)
Why is the Monarch Company able to complete projects to a very high standard?
Monarch has strong Engineering and Project Management Skills to handle large projects and are equipped with the latest technology in Building Design Programs, which allow for thorough design work, including advanced Steel Roll Forming and Robotic assembly equipment and have full Quality Systems in place.
Monarch Building Systems, (MBS), recognize the need for construction methods where detailed trades work is performed off-site.
A very successful pre-construction method, has been the development of MBS Pre-constructed Bathrooms for Multistorey Constructions, including all plumbing to stacks, electrical, fire and acoustic rated construction.
MBS Bathrooms are factory constructed as complete bathrooms, including concrete flooring.
Monarch can offer advice at the planning stage to allow architects and engineers to incorporate pre-construction concepts into the building design.........for maximum time and cost savings.
Bathroom pre-construction achieves higher quality levels and efficiencies, by factory based manufacture and also, reduced on-site time and labour input, meaning maximum time and cost savings.
MBS Bathroom manufacture, involves quality steel construction and unique technology.
Monarch Building Systems, (MBS), have been producing high quality steel wall frames for over 17 years. Internal Research and Development of our design and manufacturing processes, allows us to supply High Tensile Zincalume Coated Steel Wall Framing of superior design and manufacturing accuracy to the commercial building industry.
The necessary attributes of steel framing: accuracy of size, straightness, true and square are vital. MBS wall framing incorporates swaging of junction members to maintain a flat base for wall sheeting. Roof framing typically incorporates a ceiling diaphragm frame to minimize cracking of ceilings.
Monarch Building Systems has had extensive experience in design, manufacture and installation of light steel framing into residential construction including multi-storey townhouses and home units. Other classes of buildings supplied with framing include offices, prisons, hospitals, and research buildings. For buildings with a standard range of dimensions, MBS have undertaken comprehensive frame engineering design and performance criteria by both testing and calculation. This frame design engineering led to the issue of a "National Certificate Registration of a Building Product", by the CSIRO on 15th March, 1995, covering specific loadings arising from wind, including cyclonic wind intensities.
For building designs which fall within standard parameters, detailed design is carried out using proprietary software, which integrates designing and manufacturing control by means of CAD-CAM. For specialised framing, AutoCAD drawing is used to detail components and buildings are certified by third party consultants.
It is becoming increasingly more common to vote for Steel Framed Construction because:
- It is consistent in quality,
- The measurements are always exact,
- It is light weight,
- It can be made into infinitely variable lengths,
- It can be pre-fabricated in a factory setting
- And it never attracts those dreaded termites!

Xstrata
Xstrata is a major global diversified mining group, listed on the London and Swiss stock exchanges.
The Group is headquartered in Zug, Switzerland and has approximately 24,000 employees world-wide, including contractors.
Xstrata maintains a meaningful position in six major international commodity markets: copper, coking coal, thermal coal, ferrochrome, vanadium and zinc, with additional exposures to gold, lead and silver. The Group's operations and projects span four continents and seven countries: Australia, South Africa, Spain, Germany, Argentina, Peru and the UK.
Coal
Xstrata Coal is the world's largest producer of export thermal coal and a significant producer of coking coal.
This strong market position is a result of carefully planned growth, following Xstrata plc's acquisition of Glencore International AG's Australian and South African coal business in March 2002 and its acquisition of M.I.M. Holdings in June 2003.
Today Xstrata Coal has interests in over thirty coal mines located in Australia and South Africa and employs around 10,000 people, including contractors.
Across these global operations, there is a total commitment to maintaining a safe and healthy workplace, with Xstrata Coal allocating significant resources to training and management systems to ensure a best practice approach to safety at all times. Parallel to this is an unwavering focus on meeting its environmental commitments.
With a complementary mix of underground and open cut mines which produce thermal, coking and semi-soft coal products, Xstrata Coal is Australia's leading exporter of thermal coal and South African's third largest coal exporter. The company produces, on a managed basis, in excess of 70 million tonnes of coal each year, of which more than 50 million comes from Australia.
Xstrata Coal has positioned itself with a diverse geographical distribution of production between South Africa (23%) and Australia (77%), with the Australian operations further diversified between New South Wales (44%) and Queensland (33%). This strategic split of operations enables access to both the Pacific and Atlantic export coal markets. The export market represents around 90% of Xstrata Coal's customer base, with the Australian and domestic markets the remainder.
Best described as a truly diversified producer, in terms of geography, pricing, markets and product, Xstrata Coal is a dynamic company that is leading the way in today's world coal market.
Copper
Headquartered in Brisbane, Australia, Xstrata Copper's operations comprise mines, mineral processing plants and projects in north Queensland, Australia and Argentina and Peru in South America.
From north Queensland, Australia, Xstrata Copper supplies copper concentrates and copper cathode to international and domestic customers. From Argentina, the business supplies copper-gold concentrates and gold dore to international customers. In Southern Peru, the Xstrata Copper is evaluating the Las Bambas copper project with the aim of expanding its global copper business.
Xstrata Copper is committed to maximising value for shareholders by successfully growing and managing a portfolio of quality copper assets that deliver industry-leading returns. Our aim is to achieve this through open, honest partnerships between our people, with communities and governments, and in a safe and environmentally responsible way.
Xstrata Copper's North Queensland Division comprises the Mount Isa Mines Limited underground copper mining and processing operations, the Ernest Henry open pit copper-gold mine, the Townsville copper refinery and port operations and Bowen Coke.
Xstrata Copper manages and has a 50 percent controlling interest in the operating company of the Alumbrera open pit copper-gold mine in Argentina. Musto Exploration (Bermuda) Limited (a joint venture between Goldcorp Inc. and Northern Orion Resources Inc) owns the remaining 50 percent. The Minera Alumbrera operations consist of five facilities in three provinces: the open cut mine and processing facilities at Alumbrera, Catamarca; a 316 kilometre concentrate slurry pipeline through Catamarca and Tucumán provinces; a 202 kilometre 220kV powerline from El Bracho, Tucumán; the filter plant and rail loading facilities at Cruz del Norte, Tucumán; and the port and handline facilities at San Martín near Rosario, Santa Fe.
Zinc
Following the acquisition by Xstrata in 2001 of the zinc operations of Asturiana de Zinc SA, Xstrata is one of the world´s largest producers of zinc concentrates and refined zinc. Over half of all zinc currently consumed is used for galvanising steel, which is a highly cost-effective and environmentally friendly method of protecting steel against corrosion. Zinc also finds application in the manufacture of die-cast alloys, brass and the production of zinc oxides and chemicals.
Xstrata’s zinc and lead operations are located in northern Spain, northern Germany, Australia and the UK. They comprise: the San Juan de Nieva zinc smelter and the Arnao zinc semis plant in Asturias, Spain; the Hinojedo roasting plant in Cantabria, Spain; the Nordenham zinc smelter near Bremerhaven in north Germany; the Mount Isa George Fisher-Hilton zinc-lead mines in Queensland, Australia; McArthur River zinc-lead mine located in the Northern Territory, Australia; and the Northfleet lead refinery and lead recycling located in UK.
Ferrochrome
Xstrata, together with its ‘Pooling and Sharing Venture’ (“PSV”) partner, Merafe Resources Limited, have a combined capacity in excess of 1.4 million tonnes of ferrochrome per annum. Xstrata is currently the world's largest and amongst the lowest cost integrated ferrochrome producers in the world. A number of inherent features should ensure that it remains a low cost producer. These include direct access to rail transport, a low cost power supply, efficient work practices and access to long-life chrome ore reserves that are favorably located close to the smelting assets.
All of the group's chrome mines are shallow, underground mines. The gently dipping reefs of chromite are accessed by decline shafts. Mining is of a board and pillar nature and is currently conducted at depths ranging from 50 to 350 metres below surface. All development is on reef, thereby minimizing waste dilution. In addition to ore from its own mines, ore is purchased from nearby platinum producers, where chrome rich fines are discarded as a waste product. Since inception late in 1988 production has increased from 120'000 tonnes per annum to over 1.4 million tonnes. Production is derived from 18 furnaces at four metallurgical complexes. Most of the latter furnace additions were designed and built by Xstrata, with great emphasis placed on functionality and reliability.
Vanadium
Xstrata produces vanadium pentoxide and ferrovanadium from an integrated production facility at Rhovan, South Africa. Xstrata’s Vantech ( South Africa) and Windimurra ( Western Australia) operations were permanently closed in 2004, with Rhovan remaining as the sole producing facility. Mining at Rhovan is open cast with the processing plant situated adjacent to mine, resulting in low ore transport costs.
After mining the ore, a two-stage crushing operation takes place, followed by milling. After milling, the ore is upgraded by magnetic separation, producing a 95% magnetite concentrate containing approximately 2% vanadium. The vanadium bearing magnetite ore is then fed into a kiln and fluxed in the presence of sodium salts. Vanadium oxide is then leached and ultimately precipitated and processed to produce a final vanadium pentoxide (V 2O 5) product of 99% purity. Some of the (V 2O 5) is sold while the balance is converted to vanadium trioxide (V 2O 3) in a reactor. Following this the V 2O 3 is blended with aluminium, lime flux and scrap iron and fed into an electric arc furnace to produce ferrovanadium. The ferrovanadium is then tapped, cooled and broken down to meet the customers' size specifications. Vanadium pentoxide, trioxide and ferrovanadium are sold to a diversified international customer base. The latest production and sales figures for Xstrata’s vanadium operations are available from the 2004 annual report.
Xstrata Technology
An integral part of the Xstrata group of operations is their process technology capabilities. Technologies that encompass a large part of the mining and processing route are developed, tested and marketed around the world by Xstrata Technology

From operating weights of 800 kg to 740,000 kg, Hitachi provides a variety of equipment & attachments to cover all functions, including digging, loading, carrying, breaking, grabbing, cutting, crushing, and screening.
Why do our customers choose Hitachi? There are five reasons and benefits.
• High availability
• Low operating cost
• Better fuel economy
• Better flexibility
• Lower maintenance requirements
There are two key phrases: Hitachi’s Design Philosophy, and the other is Mutual Trust.
The Hitachi’s Design Philosophy is to design equipment in accordance with the following objectives: high reliability and high performance, and fulfilling our customers’ requirements for high productivity at low operating cost.
Mutual Trust is, to achieve a Win-Win-Win situation with our customers, Hitachi dealers and Hitachi. To achieve this, we maintain a long-term business partnership with the customer, and establish a joint task force ( Let's walk together sprit) to minimize unexpected downtime and reduce operating costs (such as maintenance & repair).
Of course, we are always considering our customers' views and needs, and reviewing equipment performance in various mining applications. To achieve a closer working relationship with our customers, in July 2003, Hitachi established the Global Mining Center (GMC) in North America.
Today, Hitachi is not only an excavator supplier, but also a supplier of rigid dump trucks that are based upon Euclid's experience and Hitachi's keywords and philosophy.
The current range of Hitachi hydraulic mining shovels/backhoes and Hitachi (Former Euclid-Hitachi) mining rigid frame dump trucks have been backed by Hitachi's most dynamic and responsive service and support network worldwide.
